South Pacific Island Airways ,began flying inter-island from American Samoa in 1973. After dergulation, it was certificated as an Alaska/Hawaii carrier and from there, additional routes were flown out of Honolulu. After some problems with the FAA, SPIA was grounded in late 1984. The airline was re-certificated on March 8, 1985 and resumed operations but was grounded again because of maintenance problems and ceased operations on December 20, 1988.
